Known as "The Hollywood of the Midwest," this charming town welcomed crews of '90s classic films. In addition to "A League of Their Own," Huntingburg hosted another baseball movie— "Soul of the Game," a story about Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Jackie Robinson, who contended to be the first Black American major league player. Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, and Minnie Driver also visited the town during the filming of "Hard Rain," a 1998 action flick involving armored cars, $3 million, and a side of natural disaster. Besides film cred, Huntingburg has an adorable historic downtown filled with unique shops and delectable restaurants.

BASEBALL-OBSESSED SMALL TOWN:
HUNTINGBURG, INDIANA (POP. 6,495)

Huntingburg’s picturesque downtown is a historic district of two-story Italianate and late Victorian commercial buildings that center around Fourth Street, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare. It’s home to an impressive collection of antique stores, specialty shops and eateries: places like Downtown Emporium, featuring multiple vendors who stock everything from vintage toys to Longaberger baskets, and My Little Soap Shop, where you can fill up on bath bombs and even paint your own pottery in the evenings.

All too often, eager locals find their great ideas held up by months of bureaucracy until, in many cases, the idea fades and dies. One city nestled in the rolling hills and wooded forests of Southern Indiana, however, has a different story. Through conscious and deliberate collaboration, with a daily focus on a city-wide comprehensive plan, the city of Jasper is a place where “things get done.” Its most recent venture: creating a people-centered downtown.

Timed with the needed replacement of century-old water pipes, the city took advantage of the construction to fully renovate their downtown square.  “When you're going to dig everything up, when you put it back, you want to put it back nicer than what it was before,” explained Jasper’s Chamber of Commerce Director Nancy Eckerle.

Nancy Eckerle, executive director of the Jasper Chamber of Commerce, said the county has retained its small-town culture even as the larger companies have grown.

“All of those large companies employ a lot of people from Dubois County and surrounding counties,” she said. “And they support the small businesses by shopping at them and using their services.”

In Jasper alone, the city is on track to have 45 ribbon-cuttings this year, many of them small businesses.

jasper wins 2022 Strongest Town

4/15/2022

One of the town’s great strengths was its decision to form the Heart of Jasper, a diverse group of organizations that leverages existing assets, transforms those in need, and instills new energy through creative programs and collaborative leadership. The town is always careful to listen to its residents and to build community engagement, but also minds its financial health with its solid Impact Jasper community investment plan.
